Virginia wrapped up the regular season with a Senior Day win against Notre Dame on Saturday, 62-57. The latest victory pushed UVA to a regular season finish of 28-2 and 17-1 in the ACC. It also displayed some ongoing trends of success for this year’s team.

So let’s kick off the Double Bonus with some of those things:

  • Multiple players chipped in for the scoring total as five different players had eight points or more even though leading scorer Kyle Guy didn’t have a single point. Devon Hall led the way with 17, while Ty Jerome and De’Andre Hunter posted double figures with 13 and 10 respectively. Mamadi Diakite added nine points and Isaiah Wilkins had eight.
Just one season after London Perrantes finished as the only Hoo to average double figures at 12.7 points per game, the Cavaliers have three players that averaged in double figures in the regular season. In fact, Perrantes is the only Cavalier that averaged more than 9.0 ppg last season and UVA has four players above that now. Guy led at 13.9. Hall at 11.9 and Jerome at 10.6 followed closely behind. Hunter averaged 9.1 points per game.
  • The Cavaliers shared the ball with 15 assists on 21 made baskets. For the season, they averaged an assist on every 0.549 made baskets (110th nationally). They also gave up just five turnovers and they ended the regular season averaging just 8.8 turnovers per game (first nationally). UVA’s 1.6-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio ranks ninth nationally.
  • Notre Dame managed just 35.8% shooting, becoming the 29th opponent in 30 games this season to fall short of 50% . UVA allowed 37.5% shooting in the regular season to finish third nationally.
  • The Fighting Irish grabbed nine offensive rebounds among 34 missed shots, giving the Hoos a defensive rebounding percentage of 73.5% for the outing. That’s one area that remains worth monitoring in the postseason. The Cavaliers struggled early this season and after the second Syracuse game on Feb. 3, their defensive rebounding percentage for the season stood at 74.9% and was trending down. It climbed to 76.1% by the end of the regular season, good enough for 59th nationally.
  • The Hoos snared seven steals among eight Irish turnovers. This has been a strong point all season long. Through the Miami game, they owned an 11.4% steal percentage that was seventh nationally. That number dropped to 10.9% by the end of the regular season and that ranks 18th nationally currently. That’s still the highest steal percentage of the Bennett era to date.
  • Some more Double Bonus themes are below.

Post Touches

If it feels like the Hoos are throwing the ball into the post more often of late, that’s because they are. At one point this season, the post-up percentage according to Synergy Sports was only a little higher than last season’s 5.9% rate (139 times among 2,370 total possessions). It’s climbed to 6.8% through the end of this regular season, though (140 times among 2,044 total possessions).

“Yeah the coaches have emphasized getting it inside,” Jack Salt said. “Even if we don’t score, bringing it inside and then kicking it out for wide open threes, it just helps to collapse the defense and then open the floor up.”
