The Virginia basketball team kept its mojo going against Notre Dame on Wednesday night with an 80-68 victory. The Cavaliers have an 11-0 ACC regular season record and Tony Bennett is 12-1 in his tenure against the Irish. UVA is 7-0 against ND in Charlottesville.

The Double Bonus is back to look at what led to the latest win against Notre Dame.

Morsell Making Strides

The first time Virginia faced Notre Dame and came away with a 66-57 win, I included this line in the bonus thoughts section of the article: “I thought about writing a full segment on Casey Morsell. He’s improving. Not at the rate some want offensively, but he’s improving all around to my eye. Next step: shot selection.” Keep in mind, that line followed a 2-of-9 shooting night for Morsell at the Joyce Center.

Round two with the Irish went even better for Morsell so it’s time for that dedicated segment for the sophomore. He finished with 15 points, one of five Hoos in double figures, on an efficient 6-of-7 shooting night. I thought his shot selection was really good in this game and I mentally noted that he passed up at least 2 shots that he would have taken previously, neither of which would have been a good enough shot on that possession with the time left on the shot clock. I thought he looked more free with his rhythm and mechanics offensively.
