Virginia Basketball Double Bonus: Pittsburgh

The Virginia basketball team picked up another ACC road win Wednesday night when it took down Pittsburgh, 66-61. The trip to the steel city has been frequently successful for the Hoos as they own an 8-3 all-time record at Pitt. The Double Bonus returns for a closer look at the latest victory.

Empty Side Pick-And-Roll

The Cavaliers created all kinds of problems for the Panthers with pick-and-roll concepts in this game. It came in a different way than the first meeting when they set high ball screens to let Jayden Gardner use short rolls into the free throw area, but it proved effective. Overall according to the Synergy Sports play by play charting, Virginia ended 18 possessions with a pick-and-roll action and it scored on 12 of those.

One of the most eye-catching trips came early in the second half from an empty side pick-and-roll. After moving the ball and the defense around first, the ball reversed through Kadin Shedrick at the top of the key and out to Kihei Clark on the right wing. Shedrick followed his pass and set a ball screen for Clark and the other three Hoos had shifted to the left side of the floor. That opened up an empty side for the two-man game with Clark and Shedrick. Pitt’s Mouhamadou Gueye stayed too long trying to help on Clark’s dribble and the return pass to Shedrick resulted in a flying dunk. Here it is.
