Virginia Basketball Double Bonus: Miami

The Virginia basketball team has rolled into February with a three-game winning streak. That included a pair of huge wins against teams ahead of the Hoos in the standings. They took down Miami on Saturday and Duke on Monday for the pair of victories. That means the Double Bonus is back for a double dip.

First up: Miami.

A Virginia 2 for 1

The Cavaliers took control of the game with the Hurricanes late in the first half at the John Paul Jones Arena, but the visitors had climbed back to within four at 30-26 in the final minute. The Hoos more than doubled their lead in 48 seconds, though. Kadin Shedrick slammed home a dunk and Armaan Franklin beat the buzzer before halftime with a 3-pointer to push UVA ahead by nine at 35-26.

It was a rare sight to see Virginia go 2 for 1 late in a half. A media member actually joked “wish they’d go 2 for 1” to me coming out of the timeout with 48 seconds to go. That’s how rare it is. Cavalier coach Tony Bennett generally doesn’t employ the strategy of going quickly on one possession to gain an extra possession in the half.
