Virginia Basketball Double Bonus: Louisville

The Virginia basketball team closed the regular season with a successful trip to Louisville. The Hoos kept their good record going in the Yum! Center – 8-2 counting the NCAA Tournament games there – with a 71-61 win. The Double Bonus is back for a closer look.

Virginia On-Ball Screen Success

After a slow start missing their first four shots, the Cavaliers got going in the first half to the tune of 68.2% shooting after the first media timeout. A big piece of the offense came courtesy of on-ball screen actions where the Hoos produced 9 of their first 31 points.

Jayden Gardner and Kody Stattmann got in on the action first. Gardner actually started the on-ball screen success with a free throw jumper near the 15:06 mark – that’s the play discussed in the Double Bonus earlier where he’s the high post option to catch and shoot or catch and be a playmaker. Stattmann earned a free throw trip near the 13:41 mark when he refused (dribbled away from) an on-ball screen and made 1 of 2 at the line.

The real menace for Louisville, however, was Kadin Shedrick. He led the charge as the on-ball screen pass recipient numerous times in the first half and then built on that with a couple of post moves, an offensive rebound tip-dunk, and free throws too. He ended up with a career-high 20 points on 8-of-9 shooting.
