Virginia Basketball Double Bonus: Boston College, Syracuse

The Virginia basketball team picked up two more wins in ACC play by topping Boston College at home before traveling to Syracuse for a victory two days later. The Hoos stand at 17-3 overall and 9-2 in the conference as the season moves into February. The Double Bonus is back for a look at the latest W’s.

Jayden Gardner At Virginia

The obvious place to start for this edition is with senior Jayden Gardner, who put together two huge games for the Wahoos. He tallied 18 points and 6 rebounds against BC plus 17 points and 8 rebounds against Cuse. That came on the heels of a Wake Forest game where he scored 5 points on 2-of-7 shooting, leading to some muttering among some fans about shuffling the starting lineup. At this point, Gardner has scored in double figures in three of the last four games and six of the 11 ACC games overall.

Of course, Gardner scoring is normal. He’s been doing that his entire college career both at UVA and East Carolina. The win at Syracuse marked the 114th time he scored in double figures in his career. With the back-to-back big games, I thought it would be good to look at his ACC games at Virginia so far during his two years in the orange and blue. So here those are all in one list:

  • Pitt (12/21): 15 points, 5 rebounds
  • Clemson (12/21): 9 points, 6 rebounds
  • Syracuse (1/22): 15 points, 4 rebounds
  • Clemson (1/22): 23 points, 5 rebounds
  • UNC (1/22): 10 points, 7 rebounds
  • VT (1/22): 4 points, 5 rebounds
  • Wake (1/22): 9 points, 4 rebounds
  • Pitt (1/22): 14 points, 4 rebounds
  • NC State (1/22): 13 points, 3 rebounds
  • Louisville (1/22): 14 points, 5 rebounds
  • Notre Dame (1/22): 22 points, 10 rebounds
  • BC (2/22): 17 points, 5 rebounds
  • Miami (2/22): 12 points, 7 rebounds
  • Duke (2/22): 17 points, 8 rebounds
  • GT (2/22): 26 points, 7 rebounds
  • VT (2/22): 17 points, 14 rebounds
  • Miami (2/22): 23 points, 7 rebounds
  • Duke (2/22): 16 points, 4 rebounds
  • FSU (2/22): 21 points, 6 rebounds
  • Louisville (3/22): 6 points, rebounds
  • Louisville (3/22): 17 points, rebounds
  • UNC (3/22): 17 points, 2 rebounds
  • FSU (12/22): 10 points, 7 rebounds
  • Miami (12/22): 8 points, 2 rebounds
  • GT (12/22): 14 points, 2 rebounds
  • Pitt (1/23): 4 points, 3 rebounds
  • Syracuse (1/23): 10 points, 3 rebounds
  • UNC (1/23): 3 points, 1 rebound
  • FSU (1/23): 3 points, 3 rebounds
  • VT (1/23): 12 points, 4 rebounds
  • Wake (1/23): 5 points, 2 rebounds
  • BC (1/23): 18 points, 6 rebounds
  • Syracuse (1/23): 17 points, 8 rebounds

A couple of things to note in there. One, he bounced back from the UNC-FSU pocket where he played just 15 and 19 minutes to string together three good games among the next four. Two, he’s given Boston College and Syracuse fits in every matchup. In those five games, he’s averaged 15.4 points and 5.2 rebounds.
