RED BANK, N.J. – It’s been something of a source of frustration for Virginia commitment Emmett McNamara during his senior season. The Red Bank (NJ) Catholic defensive end blossomed into a star last fall during his first season of high school football.
But this year, McNamara has developed a reputation for disrupting offenses and opposing teams make it a point to run away from the 6’6”, 255-pounder. That was certainly the case Friday night when his previously unbeaten Red Bank Catholic team couldn’t hold onto a 17-14 third quarter lead and lost to fellow undefeated St. John-Vianney, 35-17.
Even as RBC coach Frank Edgerly made an effort to move McNamara from one side of the line to the other, Vianney’s running plays and roll outs mostly went opposite of McNamara.
“That’s been pretty commonplace this year,” Edgerly said. “There’s opportunity for other people to make plays as a result, but it’s been frustrating for him. When you have a good player, especially at this level, they are going to try to take him out of the mix.”
