The Virginia football team opened the Bronco Mendenhall era with a disappointing 37-20 loss to Richmond on Saturday.

“We knew Richmond was a good football team,” UVA quarterback Kurt Benkert said. “They’re really good. Obviously it didn’t go the way we thought it would go, but we prepared and we saw their film. They’re a good team.”

“Buck” linebacker Zach Bradshaw couldn’t sleep the night before preseason camp began because he was so excited about this season under head coach Bronco Mendenhall. Following the 37-20 loss to Richmond, an emotional Bradshaw expressed shock and disappointment while also acknowledging there are 11 games left to play.
