Virginia football practice starts in one month and the quarterback plan already looks crystal clear. While that picture mostly came into focus in the spring, recent developments all but solidified the outlook for the Cavaliers.

The top spot has belonged to Kurt Benkert all along. That much was evident in the spring when he took nearly every snap under center, giving way only to spread option type looks with De’Vante Cross and Daniel Hamm. The rest of the plan fell into place with some news since.

After the spring, Sonny Abramson left the team but remained enrolled at UVA. Abramson rarely appeared in answers to quarterback questions so the proverbial wall writing seemed pretty clear with his role. The roster took another loss when expected Missouri graduate transfer Marvin Zanders changed plans and did not come to Virginia. Only Benkert, Cross, and Joe Spaziani occupy the quarterback spot on the roster after the spring. The latter is a special teams contributor but not an option under center.

On Wednesday, VirginiaSports.com writer Jeff White released a feature article on Cross that indicated he continues to cross train at receiver this summer after working there for most of his reps in the spring. While that means he likely can and will be able to take some spread option snaps, it doesn’t sound like he will be the immediate back-up option to Benkert. It’s possible that he could take the route of receivers coach Marques Hagans if something comes up injury wise. Hagans had a slash role at first, but moved over to fill in for an injured Matt Schaub after one start for Anthony Martinez.
