Can Olamide Zaccheaus and the Hoos get the O going? ~ Kris Wright

Rate Virginia’s opening win over William & Mary a serviceable start. Not great, not championship caliber, but serviceable.

UVA claimed its first season-opening win since 2013 and did not commit a turnover for the first time since that same year, breaking a 42-game streak of having at least one turnover. The Hoos held an opponent to 10 or fewer points for the first time since 2013 as well. The 240 yards allowed against the Tribe were the fewest a Virginia defense surrendered since that season too. Anytime you do something you haven’t done in three-plus seasons, and in this case, four positive things you haven’t done in three seasons, that’s progress.

We saw progress Saturday. Yes, it was William & Mary but over the last three years Virginia has played worse teams than the Tribe and given up more points than 10, allowed more than 240 yards, and turned the ball over. It’s also only the third time in the last 26 games Virginia had three or fewer penalties in a game. It’s progress.

With that, let’s see how the Hoos graded out.
