Virginia’s offense had no problem getting in its own way against Indiana in a 34-17 loss, but the Cavalier special terms turned what was clearly a competitive game into a route. The UVA football team simply isn’t in a place where it can overcome lackluster efforts from two out of three phases to win. The grades reflect the struggles.

The offense struggled to run the football again this week, grading out at 53% in the run game, but scored even worse with a 50% effort passing. Virginia continued its difficulty capitalizing on plus field possessions and managed to produce a woeful 0.19 points per play.

But the real damage came with the special teams performance where every unit but punt return graded out below 64%. The operation failed to convert on a fake field goal, allowed a punt return for a touchdown, and set up three additional Indiana scores with sloppy punting and return coverage.

With an average effort from both the offense and special teams the UVa defense held a potent Hoosier offense in check and had the Hoos in a position to win.
