Before the Virginia football team took on Virginia Tech, I wrote in the Miami Grades & Trend Report the following:
“Since 1995 when Bud Foster took over the helm of the Hokie defense, George Welsh (2-4), Al Groh (1-8) and Mike London (0-5) have losing records against Foster. [Bronco] Mendenhall got a rude introduction to Tech’s defensive coordinator last season in a 52-10 beatdown in Blacksburg. Foster doesn’t care who the Virginia coach is or what the scheme is – he owns Virginia’s offenses.”
And the beat goes on. He still does.
The Cavalier defense held “offensive genius” Justin Fuente’s offense to its lowest point total of his tenure in Blacksburg and held the Hokies below their seasonal average of 3.75 yards per carry. The defense also kept Tech below a 50% success rate in red zone possessions as Tech went 2-5 on the day – also a first in the Fuente era. Despite concluding seven drives in Virginia territory, the visitors managed just 10 points and 0.13 yards per play.
