For much of the afternoon at Scott Stadium, the quarterbacks remained off limits for contact. That meant the schemes stayed basic and transfer Bryce Perkins stayed contained from doing anything too eye-opening.

Near the end of the final spring practice, however, fans finally got the briefest glimpse at what might be on display this fall for UVA. Perkins kept the ball around the right side of the field, spotted an alley, and accelerated before a hole 10 yards downfield closed. He got there fast. The officials on duty finally blew the play dead just before Perkins could take the play all the way to the end zone in order to prevent any last-moment secondary hits.

That’s OK. Judging by the audible response from the fans at Scott Stadium, that one play showed enough. Virginia defensive back Bryce Hall summed up what likely crossed all those fans’ minds in that moment.

“That dude’s fast man,” Hall said. “He’s got some wheels on him. And he’s really elusive. He’s got blazing speed and when he gets a full head of steam, it’s tough to bring him down.”
