Virginia Still Trying To Rein In Opponents’ Explosive Touchdowns

The Virginia football team picked up an important win against Ohio on Saturday, taking a 45-31 victory in a game relocated to Nashville. Vanderbilt’s venue provided the opportunity to play the game and get a victory projected as significant for the Hoos’ bowl hopes.

The change in scenery did not become a trend-breaker in one category, though. UVA got the win, but the defense still showed a couple of cracks when it came to long touchdown plays allowed. Ohio scored on passing plays of 29 and 36 yards in the first half to add to an already long list of opponents’ explosive scoring plays.

Through 28 games of the Bronco Mendenhall era, the Cavaliers have allowed 34 touchdowns of 25 yards or more on defense. That’s an average of 1.21 long scoring plays per game.
