A good win and a strong offensive performance highlighted the Cavalier weekend in Nashville.

Virginia’s offense came into the 21st century, or maybe the play-calling came into the 21st century. A highly efficient passing game netted an off-the-chart passer rating of 222 and the option mix was a beautiful sight to behold. Bryce Perkins was accurate, sound with his reads, and perfect on timing and accuracy. Mobile quarterbacks are cool toys and big plays are hammers on a defense. Virginia’s 0.73 points per play average would rank No. 1 nationally if that were a year-to date number but I’ll take it every other game.

UVA’s linebackers are getting better. They are still emerging with pass coverage but learning quickly and adapting in game to instruction. Virginia’s defensive line is developing, and the run fits are better from the front seven across the board. The secondary had an off day in coverage but even there, take out a block of six minutes from the end of the last minute of the first half and the first five minutes of the second half and Ohio’s QB went 8-of-22 passing – something I’ll take every game.

Both the defense and offense need to get better in the red zone as both posted failing or low D grades in the red zone. The defense allowed 80% of the total available points for the Bobcats and the offense only collected 24 of a possible 42 points (57%).
