No Virginia, you can’t ‘just show up.’
There is no doubt the Cavaliers have better talent and are a better football team than Old Dominion. There’s no doubt Virginia Tech is a better football team than ODU. But neither team gets to go home with a “W” just because they show up for the game and both of the Commonwealth’s major football programs should have learned this by now. Make no mistake, the Hoos should be disappointed by their play because they played like they took victory for granted.
For the first 19 minutes and 28 seconds against Old Dominion, the Virginia defense couldn’t tackle, couldn’t cover, and couldn’t stop the Monarch offense. ODU scored 17 points on its first three drives and UVA’s fourth win in four games appeared to be in jeopardy. The visitors gained 211 yards on 25 plays, averaged 8.44 yards per play, and consumed 14:28 seconds of clock during that start.
Virginia’s offense fared no better.
