Brennan Armstrong already had played at Virginia. In 11 games in fact. He already had thrown 2 touchdowns in his career too. On the day of his first start at quarterback for the UVA football team, however, Armstrong admitted he had some nerves.

Fortunately for the Cavaliers, he shook those off and helped his team get a 38-20 victory in its season opener against Duke.

“Leading into the game, I was a little nervous,” Armstrong said. “Once I was running the ball a little bit and got hit a few times, I started settling in. The second quarter we had some good drives, kind of stalling out at the end – we were trying to push the tempo trying to get another score at the end and I threw up an interception. Overall, it’s just good to get a first win. I think I’m going to settle down and be more consistent as each game comes.”

This game followed that pattern. Armstrong started off slowly with shaky moments, but he bounced back and then finished strong. In the end, he finished with 269 passing yards by completing 24 of 45 passes. That places him second in passing yards in a first career UVA start. He had 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions, matching his previous career totals in both categories. He also chipped in 47 rushing yards and his first career rushing touchdown.
