Can Virginia Get Its Offense Going Earlier?

Some time in October in Virginia, the days get shorter, the weather gets a little cooler, and the leaves change color. While that’s probably not what ignites the UVA football team’s offense, increased scoring has been normal in the second half of the season in recent years.

That’s the jumping off point for the latest article in the “50 Thoughts Before Virginia Football Kickoff” summer reading series – “Can Virginia Get Its Offense Going Earlier?”

When you break down the scoring numbers for the Cavaliers over the last three seasons, the offense picks up its production after the halfway point. The opposite was true in the first two years of the Bronco Mendenhall era, but once the program established its preferred dual threat quarterback model, the pattern reversed. It turned out to be a fairly dramatic uptick in 2019 and 2020 with a double-digit leap in average scoring.
