When Bronco Mendenhall and company took over the Virginia football program, quarterback stability … well, let’s just say it wasn’t a thing. The Cavaliers had started a different quarterback on opening day in all but one season from 2006 through 2015. Michael Rocco went back to back in 2011 and 2012, but UVA fans know how that story went.

That trend has been stopped under Mendenhall. This Saturday when UVA kicks off the season against William & Mary, it will mark the third straight two-year sequence for quarterback starters on opening day. Kurt Benkert started in 2016 and 2017. Bryce Perkins started in 2018 and 2019. Enter Brennan Armstrong, who started in 2020 and is clearly entrenched as QB1 for the Hoos entering 2021.

Stability at quarterback, as Greg Waters noted in an earlier Sabre article, has helped the Virginia offense gain traction. The Hoos have made a steady climb in scoring offense and landed in the top 50 for the past two seasons. In the previous two-year batches, the offense improved in year two with a repeat starter at QB. Now Armstrong will attempt to pull off a similar feat this season.
