In The Sabre Summer Reading series, the discussion started with the leader of the Virginia football team’s offensive prowess, quarterback Brennan Armstrong. Next up are the guys Armstrong will be throwing to: the receivers.
The group helped power last season’s best passing attack among power five conference teams in passing yards per game. The receiver position is perhaps the deepest on the Virginia roster as most of the group returns from last season. Despite the head coaching transition, the position group also retained coach Marques Hagans, and he was even promoted to be the associate head coach upon Tony Elliott’s arrival. Hagans has been critical to the success Virginia has seen at the wide receiver position in recent years having coached nine of the 15 wide receivers that appear on the UVA top 20 career receptions list.
Hagans’ group heads into 2022 with depth, experience, a wealth of talent, and expectations of still improving upon last year’s elite production level.
Veterans
In 2021, the wide receiving corps included four different players with over 600 receiving yards and three of those four return for the 2022 season with Ra’Shaun Henry – signed by the Carolina Panthers – being the only departure of the four. Add in tight end Jelani Woods, who was drafted in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts, and Virginia was the only team with five different players with more than 500 yards apiece in 2021.
