Virginia Football Summer Reading: Running Backs

For the running back position, there is a lot of uncertainty for the Virginia football team. This has been an issue for the past few seasons, as the Cavaliers have been unable to get a sufficient rushing attack that they would like beyond the quarterback position.

Last season, UVA was No. 105 in rushing yards per game. A positive was the 21 rushing touchdowns, but 9 came from Brennan Armstrong. Outside of Armstrong, the rest of the rushing attack proved to be lackluster. With Wayne Taulapapa, the leading rusher from 2021, transferring to Washington, it opens up some more touches for the other guys but also questions about the depth chart.

As it has been preached by Virginia coach Tony Elliott through the offseason, the team is looking for an efficient rushing game that will keep the offense moving.

“When we say balanced, it’s that we are effective running the ball,” Elliot says. “Sometimes, that means three yards is an effective run. If you can stay ahead of the chains or you can convert a short yardage running the ball, that’s what we’re trying to establish.”
