The 2022 regular season for the Virginia football team will end in typical fashion against in-state rival Virginia Tech. Although there is no love lost between the two sides, the rivalry has been one-sided since 2004, as Tech has won 17 of the last 18. Last season was no different, as the Hokies scored five points in the fourth quarter to hang on for a 29-24 win.

This year’s matchup will be between two first-year head coaches, as Tony Elliott will be taking on Brent Pry’s Hokies. Both teams took a different approach in hiring a new coach. Elliott comes with an offensive resume, while the Hokies moved away from Justin Fuente’s offensive mind to Pry’s defensive background. Pry is no stranger to Blacksburg as he was a graduate assistant from 1995 to 1997 under the tutelage of Bud Foster, which were his first three seasons as a defensive coordinator. After a few mediocre seasons, Fuente has been replaced, but Pry will look to keep the winning ways alive for the Hokies in this rivalry.

The schedule preview series takes a look at the final opponent in the regular season.

What To Expect On Game Day

What’s To Like: Defense. The Hokies return some important pieces on their defense. Brent Pry has worked nearly 30 seasons as a defensive coach with the last eight in Happy Valley as Penn State’s defensive coordinator. With some of the linebackers and defensive backs returning, Pry will more than likely shift players around as he implements his scheme. The experience this unit return helps ease the transition, though.
