When you look back at the Virginia football game at Illinois, the performance really varied between the offense and the defense in the 24-3 loss. The offense couldn’t find any groove and produced only one field goal that barely cleared the cross bar. The defense, meanwhile, forced 4 turnovers and allowed just 17 total points with the other touchdown coming off a UVA special teams fumble.

In terms of the Pro Football Focus (PFF) grades, which aim to measure the level of execution, the same split is easy to observe.

The offense ended up with only two players in the average grade territory with Jestus Johnson III (66.8) and Mike Hollins (65.9) falling in that range, while everyone else on offense produced a 61.6 or worse. The Hoos had 10 players with a slightly below average or worse grade in the game, including rough games for the stars within the passing game (more on that below).

The defense featured 10 players with an average or better grade, ranging from Jack Camper’s 64.7 to Jonas Sanker’s 75.8. Six players posted a slightly above average mark or better in the 70’s. Particularly noteworthy within the data is that the three main safeties all logged between a 76.2 and an 80.0 in coverage grades; Clary had the top mark there with a very strong 80.0.
