Surprised. Shocked. Sick. Virginia football fans probably fall all over the emotional spectrum when it comes to the passing offense this season. After watching the offense throw it all over the yard with the nation’s No. 2 passing attack last fall, that’s understandable as the Hoos have sputtered out of the gate with the 94th ranked passing offense so far.

That frustration has bubbled up since the Syracuse loss last Friday as fans point to the play of quarterback Brennan Armstrong. New scheme or not, the senior has opened the campaign 73-140 passing for 848 yards with 3 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. That’s a 52.1% completion percentage that currently sits last among the ACC’s regular quarterbacks.

What happened to the air game? Armstrong said it’s not any one thing.

“It’s all of it,” Armstrong said. “Missed throws, drops, timing stuff – it’s all of it. It all comes together. That’s why I was saying at the beginning of the season that completion percentage kind of tells the tale of how you’re doing, how you’re clicking as an offense, especially the receivers. It’s a combination of everything from the protection to me throwing a good ball to them catching it to us being on the same timing, same page. That little stat tells a lot.”
