The Virginia football team continued to experience road woes with a third loss away from home Saturday. Duke delivered the defeat this time with a 38-17 final score.

Fans found Illinois frustrating and Syracuse disappointing. This one? This one seems to have made a lot of fans just plain old mad.

That’s understandable in a way given that the loss snapped a seven-game winning streak against Duke. The streak benefited in part from playing four of the previous five contests at Scott Stadium due to the pandemic year shuffle. The score, however, represented the polar opposite of UVA’s 48-0 romp last season in Charlottesville and with both schools having new coaches in charge, it was a result ripe for fan ire.

In terms of the Pro Football Focus (PFF) grades, which aim to measure the level of execution, the Cavaliers received a slightly higher grade overall (64.3 vs. 60.9) and on offense (58.2 vs. 49.0) with a slightly lower grade on defense (66.5 vs. 74.0) compared to the previous week at Syracuse. Despite a critical kickoff return fumble, the special teams received an overall grade of 73.5, the second highest of the season behind a 73.8 against ODU. Demick Starling, who had that fumble, got dinged significantly with a 51.6 kickoff return grade.
