For the first time in seven years, a new voice is doling out instructions for the Virginia football team’s offensive line. That voice is new even for Cavalier coach Tony Elliott.
The Hoos brought in Terry Heffernan from Stanford to replace Garett Tujague, who departed for NC State this offseason. There was no previous connection with Elliott or other UVA coaches prior to seeking the job. That’s a somewhat unique path to join a coaching staff.
“No connection, which is very uncommon in our business,” Heffernan said. “Usually you get hired places that your friends work or they can vouch for you. I was at Stanford, Coach [David] Shaw our head coach resigned, and made me available. When this job came open, it was something I was really excited about, very interested in. So really it was more me pursuing it.”
Heffernan’s job appears challenging on paper.
