Quarterbacks will grab all the headlines during fall camp at any school and Virginia is no different, but perhaps the most intriguing position battle this fall comes on the other side of the ball at cornerback.
Five different players started games at corner for UVA a year ago and only two return in Keandre “Dre” Walker and Malcolm Greene, who has worked predominantly at the nickel position this preseason. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers brought in three veterans at cornerback through the transfer portal in Kempton Shine (Eastern Michigan), Kendren Smith (Penn), and Jam Jackson (Robert Morris). The two starters at corner will come from the four-person group of Shine, Smith, Jackson and Walker, the one returner in the group.
“Kempton has done a really nice job, Kendren Smith, Jam Jackson, you look at Keandre Walker,” Virginia defensive coordinator John Rudzinski said. “It’s been super competitive and that’s what you want. A bunch of guys have made plays, they play with great physicality and they definitely show the ability to win one-on-one.”
