If 'holier than thou' means fraud paper classes are unacceptable, then -
yeah, we're guilty.

Not sure ... do we have athletes taking classes other than in summer at other schools (e.g., Duke and UNC-CH at NC Central)

Care to elaborate?
"aerospace" is not a filed of study.

Perhaps you are attempting to refer to Aerospace engineering? ... and, if so, what is the "UVA gen ed" requirements to which you refer and what does that mean in this context?

VT core requirements for engineering? Did the student switch from engineering at UVA to non-engineering at tech? Of course, there would be other requirements to satisfy for a liberal arts degree.

It is good to see, however, that if one school is too tough in individual cases, fall-back alternatives can be located within the Commonwealth.

It's a good thing I'm not CTB
Knowing SVP is such a Maryland guy, I would probably have answered his question about not making the Final Four with something like:

"You know, I think coaching is about more than victories and success is more than banners. So if I never make it there, I'll be proud of the impact I've had on the lives of young men, and honored to be considered with other coaches who never made the Final Four, like Lefty Driesell."

I'll go on record that the pre requisites for Northwestern ...
is far more difficult than most Ohio State degrees. I saw some of the classes the Bucknut athletes took. It was ridiculous. Now look at Northwestern. The communication school is harder to get into than our LAS program. The music and fine arts programs require an audition. The engineering and nursing schools are difficult too. I don't exactly call an education/social major a blow off at NU.

I know basketball players at Northwestern who were declared ineligible in their first quarter of their freshman year.

Yes ... every school has blow off classes. However, not every University has blow off majors and pre requisites. That's what is important.

JHU is a good University. However, don't compare D3 to D1. There's a huge difference when it comes to revenue scholarship athletes.

UVA has its easier majors. However, from what I've learned, the amount of blow off classes is lower than the other universities. That's the key difference.

Of course there are easier classes to take.
..and there are tutors who help the athletes who struggle academically, so we absolutely are able to get some guys who aren't necessarily that academically-minded through to graduation.

But the reality is that happens at JHU, also. A lot of their athletes would never have gotten into JHU if it was solely an academic decision, and struggle to get through without some help.

But we are dealing with a huge spectrum of how universities, especially D-1 universities, deal with this. And the reality is that there are plenty of schools that are a total and complete joke with regard to how they educate their student athletes who play in the revenue sports. They shunt them into certain majors where absolutely nothing will be expected of them, and it is a complete joke. A lot of these programs would NEVER rearrange the basketball practice schedule (as Bennett did for Brogdon) so that one of their athletes could make a class that he wanted to take that required consistent attendance. Rather, they would actively discourage the student from taking that course because it might be too hard or interfere with basketball.

And that is not the case at UVa. The athletes' will have varying scholastic aptitudes, and I think UVa does well to challenge each athlete at whatever level they are at. I think there is no question that there have been plenty of athletes at UVa that probably shouldn't have been at UVa, and were only there because of sports. But instead of just "making sure they stay eligible and coming close but not crossing the academic fraud line", our athletic department works hard at challenging them intellectually, even if they start out at a lower level. So you see tons of guys like Brogdon, Patrick Kerney, the Barber twins, Tom Burns, who are notable examples, who do really well scholastically, and the rest who may not necessarily stand out scholastically, but at least better themselves during their four years here.

UVa is not the ONLY high D-1 school that does this (Northwestern, Stanford, Notre Dame come to mind, though there of course are more than just that), but unfortunately we are a dying breed in high D-1 revenue sports, I am afraid. We probably treat our bball and football players close to how we treat our other non-revenue athletes. At most schools there is a huge dichotomy in those two groups.

At the end of the day, I can confidently say that we are closer to the Hopkins model than we are to the SEC football model. So, yes, we are right to look down on those schools that don't even try.

(re-posting) 11pm SportsCenter: UNC, Hoos, Pitino, Trip, Kyrie? ... (link)
... not sure how Kyrie got into that blend, unless someone on staff in Bristol really needed an extra shot of Duke-juice after mentioning UVA's 3rd ACC regular season championship in 5 seasons ...

To recap the UVA piece:

1. Congratulations UVA!

2. Don't get too excited about winning the ACC regular season, as it only correlates to NCAAT success if your name is UNC or Duke.

An interesting extrapolation of past history ... UNC and Duke combined in the prior 64 seasons to win at least a share of the ACC regular season championship 49 times. Roughly half of those instances (25 of 49) resulted in an NCAA Final Four appearance.

The UVA/Tony Bennett era provides a small sample size ... the team's been a force in 4 prior seasons, winning 2 ACC regular season championships during that time. One trip to the Final Four would have been on par with UNC/Duke's rate ... something like eliminating one big run by Syracuse in the Elite 8 game ... that's the basis for this ESPN extrapolation.

As far as leading indicators go, some might point to UNC and Duke's 11 national championships over the 64 years of the ACC (though UNC stole most of theirs via fraud) and note that 10 of those 11 Natty's came in seasons that included ACC regular season championships.

A look back...
Phil Gosselin, one of our best pure hitters ever, started out a season with 0-10 or 0-12. Justin indeed started out very slow as a firstyear, rarely hitting the ball out of the infield on our NCAA Champ. Hard to do a lot of judging with the paucity of outdoor practices. Personally I struggled to hit above .100, well below the Mendoza Line, in cold, early games in the mid-'60s. It is still hard to believe UVa practices outside in February and March. Times they did a-change.

One thing I've noticed lately is that we have had no championship-caliber players coming in here championship-ready as firstyears since Haseley/Clement/Smith and Fisher before that. In the age of 3 and done in college baseball, it's important to bring in some players that can start out hot from the jump if we are going to compete successfully in ACC regular season, ACCTs, Regionals, Super-Regionals, and NCAA WS.

For those familiar with BOC's methods. How long will Caymen stay in the 2
hole if he don't hit weight?

Obviously, I don't see him practice, and I wish him the best. I assume coach believes he can hit and 15 at bats is a small sample size. All that. But, we can ill afford his batting average between Jake and Andy.

I'd be ready to try Justin, Jake, and Andy as 1, 2, 3 to see what happens.

I have followed the program long enough to know how BOC handles such matters. The last I remember was Justin's truly awful start his first season when his lack of hitting sat him a long while so I'm asking.

It appears to me that a lot more posters are weighing in on the ACC Men's Swimming & Diving Meet than did on the women's.

Is that because we have a number of former men's swimmers posting here, or is there some other reason, or am I imagining the whole thing?

I have no ulterior motive....I'm merely curious.

But like George Costanza, he left you wanting more
There is no one on this board who didn't feel great about this team going into the BC game, but the final 6 games of the season erased some of that positivity. Even then, most of us still felt good about the team having held VT to 10 points, and being bowl eligible, however, getting stomped by Navy pretty much scuttled any positive outlook on the season as a whole. It leaves the feeling that the opening 5-1 record was either great scheduling, a lot of luck, or both, and the bowl eligibility while commendable isn't necessarily an accurate reflection of the level the program is operating at.

I agree that Bronco should get at least a total of 4 years, but I think
sticking with him beyond that point just because we aren't certain of anyone else, is a poor excuse for not making a move, if the AD feels Bronco isn't/can't get it done. Someone had to take a gamble on Saban once upon a time(didn't work out so well for the Dolphins).

I think if you take the approach that some of us have been talking about and set some good metrics, then you can justify dismissal of a coach. If a candidate then says he isn't interested because he thinks we were too fast to can Bronco, then we lay out those metrics and say do you think that's reasonable? If you agree it is, then you're saying he didn't meet a reasonably expectable standard over the course of 4 seasons. That is why he was fired. Here are the goals we have for the next 4 - 5 seasons. Do you believe those are reasonable expectations?

ACC Coaches came up with the idea
Among the reasons I can think of:
1) Further enforces the desire of the ACC that a school that wants to win must commit to diving also (including resources).
2) When divers counted half, many schools only brought 2 divers. One extra diver was assured, so the compromise was to allow 1 extra swimmer (especially in the first years of this change when, perhaps, schools had not put the same emphasis on diving). Also, only 3 of 13 individual events are diving, so it makes some sense.
3) Give more opportunities to athletes to participate.
4) The top schools have at least 18 scoring swimmers - so they wanted to increase the number. There may be some hope that there will be a trickle up effect to increase the number of participants at NCAAs.
5) More is better!

NOTE: The effect of this rule change for divers meant that our Men were down one athlete, a diver, due to only having two on the roster. We have 2 men committed to start in Fall 2018, so we should have 4 on next year's roster.

For the Women, it meant that Corey Johnson got to dive. She would most likely have missed the cut if the choice had been Corey/Jocelyn (counting as half each) vs. our last swimming athlete.

First 4-0 start in a long time. O is resilient and has loads of more looks. Prep for Hoos O is difficult - who do you put the best pole on ? Hoos D is tough when it needs to be and will be very tough on the 1:1 D required to win ACC games. FO and Goalie are competitive and have depth.

This is a very good team. It's more about motivation and desire now.
