Match-ups To Watch

Virginia tight ends Jake McGee and Zach Swanson vs. Miami’s linebackers. The Cavaliers’ most consistent passing plays this season have come with David Watford rolling out or sliding the pocket before finding his tight ends. McGee, despite playing in one fewer game than many of his teammates, leads the team in receptions (36) and is tied for second in receiving yards (305). Swanson has added 17 receptions for 150 yards in eight games. Miami’s linebackers are aggressive against the run so that means the tight ends off of play action often work against this group.

Virginia receiver Tim Smith vs. Miami’s secondary. The Hurricanes have shown some vulnerability to vertical passing routes up the sidelines at times and that’s a tailor made area for Tim Smith, who excels at those patterns. Smith enters this game just 5 receptions short of the 100-catch club at UVa. He has 24 receptions this season for a team-leading 365 yards. Watch to see if the Hoos attack the intermediate 15- to 20-yard areas up the sidelines with Smith this week.
