The Afternoon Break: Harris, Staley Basketball News

The Virginia men’s lacrosse season ended with a dud of a performance against Johns Hopkins on Sunday. The Blue Jays trailed 2-0 early but then seized the momentum en route to a 14-8 victory. The Cavaliers finished the season with a 10-6 record.

To add to the disappointment, Sunday’s loss marked the first time since 2007 that UVa exited the NCAA Tournament in the first round. Of course, the Hoos didn’t even make the tournament in 2013 after posting a 7-8 record.

Christian Swezey at Inside Lacrosse says that the program has lost momentum:

The lacrosse team has enjoyed high national rankings this season, too. It was ranked No. 2 on March 3 and began the season 6-0.

But the Virginia lacrosse program looks to have lost a lot of momentum recently.

The Cavaliers won the national title in 2011 and were ranked No. 1 for six weeks in 2012. It seems a long time ago. All-Americans Steele Stanwick and Chris Bocklet left following a Quarterfinal loss to Notre Dame in 2012.

The Cavaliers haven’t won a playoff game since.

Staley With Team USA

Speaking of UVa basketball stars, legendary women’s point guard Dawn Staley has been named an assistant coach for the 2014 USA Basketball Women’s World Championship Team. Staley won 10 gold medals as a player, including three Olympic and two FIBA World Championship gold medals. Staley was an assistant on the 2008 USA Olympic Team that also won goal. She worked as the head coach of the 2007 USA Pan American Games Team that won gold as well. She will head the USA U18 National Team this summer.

“I’m really looking forward to getting back into the USA Basketball network,” Staley said in this official news release. “It’s reliving some of the best days of my life.”.

Staley, now the head coach at the University of South Carolina, also started a charity recently named Innersole that collects new sneakers for needy children. Read an article on that endeavor here or visit the Innersole website.
