The ACC spring meetings run throughout the week in Amelia Island, Fla., and Tuesday’s big news features the ACC Tournament for men’s basketball. The league announced that it will move to a Tuesday-Saturday format instead of a Wednesday-Sunday format beginning with the 2015 event. This is the first time since 1981 that the ACC will showcase a Saturday Night Championship Game.

The ACC, and television partner ESPN, set the two Friday semifinal games for 7 and 9 p.m. with the Saturday title game set for 8:30 p.m. ESPN and the ACC Network will carry all 14 games in the tournament.

The ACC regular season will conclude on the Saturday prior to the tournament.

Football Stays At Eight ACC Games

Other news coming out of the ACC spring meetings included football scheduling. Commissioner John Swofford recommended that the league stay at eight ACC games, something that is expected to be finalized in a business session when the meetings wrap up Thursday. Starting in 2017, the league is also requiring each team to play either Notre Dame or another “power five” conference foe (Big Ten, Pac 12, Big 12, SEC).

The Daily Press’ David Teel wrote a column Tuesday that calls the move unimaginative.

“The decision is flawed, the addendum pointless and the roll out odd. Otherwise, the ACC’s announcement Monday that the league is retaining an eight-game conference football schedule was a little slice of heaven.”

And that’s just the opening paragraph. Take a look at the full column for Teel’s excellent take on the whole scheduling thing.

  1. Rare for me to say it, but Teel is spot on about nine conference games. We should have done it.
