The Afternoon Break: Football Talk Picking Up

Can the Cavaliers take on a tough schedule and defy expectations? ~ Mike Ingalls

With a little more than 100 days on the calendar before Virginia kicks off its football season on Aug. 30 against UCLA, it’s not surprising to start seeing season outlook articles pop up across the internet. Dan Kelley at Rant Sports wrote about the Cavaliers here.

Kelley pins the Hoos to finish last in the Coastal Division, but says the unpredictable division can create surprises. The big take-away from an outside perspective: “If a few of the elite prospects London was able to lure to Virginia start performing as well as they were expected to, Virginia could see a major turnaround.” In other words, some UVa fans’ perception that the Cavaliers have under-performed for their talent level is shared by at least one outside observer.

Schedule Breakdowns

Jerry Palm at CBSSports.com takes a look at the ACC’s non-conference schedules here. Based on the old Bowl Championship Series Strength Of Schedule formula using last year’s data for current year opponents, CBS charts Virginia with the No. 10 strength of schedule nationally.

Here is Palm’s paragraph on the Hoos:

Mike London’s job might be on the line after a couple of rough years. This schedule won’t help. Like Miami, they have cross-division games with Florida State and Louisville. They play at BYU outside the league and host UCLA. The Hoos better get those chin straps buckled up.

That falls in line with what many of The Sabre’s message board posters have been saying this offseason.

Rant Rates UVa Season An A-

Also at Rant Sports, Ed Morgans breaks down Virginia’s basketball season here. The article hits all the highlights from the year from outperforming preseason projections (fourth in the ACC) to the Pack-Line Defense to the obligatory Ralph Sampson reference.
