The Afternoon Break: Athlon Predicts ACC Football

Will Virginia find a way to break out of the Coastal Division cellar in 2014? ~ Mike Ingalls

Another day, another publication predicts an upcoming season.

It’s pretty much like clockwork at this time of year for these prognostications to hit the internet. This time, Athlon Sports checks in with its ACC football guesses (click here). No, it isn’t good news for Virginia.

“While the Atlantic Division has a clear pecking order, the Coastal is up for grabs. Six teams appear to have a shot at the division title, with Virginia projected to finish a distant seventh,” Steven Lassan wrote.

Something else that jumped out from the article is this nugget from David Fox: Georgia Tech has a “remarkable streak of 19 straight seasons without a losing record in league play.” That line probably makes some Virginia fans think of the good old days with George Welsh. Who among the Hoo nation wouldn’t want seven wins instead of seventh place this season?

In another bit of Virginia football news, Pete Roussel of coachingsearch.com reports via a source that Zach Tenuta, son of defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta, will join the Cavaliers as a defensive graduate assistant this fall.

Lacrosse Final Four Changes?

After the NCAA Tournament wrapped up over Memorial Day weekend, this thread (message board links eventually expire) popped up on the site about attendance, costs, and such for the Final Four. This Inside Lacrosse article highlights some of those issues after the championship weekend experienced its seventh straight year of declining attendance.

Important changes [Anthony] Holman discussed with IL included lowering ticket prices, moving the NCAA Quarterfinals back on campus to higher seeds and looking into different dates and times for the event, the latter tying in with ESPN’s continually advancing coverage of college lacrosse.

“This is still one of our premier championships,” Holman said. “I don’t think any of us see that changing in the near future. Why we spend so much time and effort on it is because we value it so much. While the public may perceive success differently than we do, we still can’t bury our heads in the sand. We have to address some of those things that are being said and maybe be better to communicate what our goals are.”

Make sure to read the whole article for more thoughts about lowering ticket prices and more about lacrosse’s championship weekend.

There are some simply ridiculous runs by Thomas Jones, who went on to star at UVa, in this video. It highlights a battle between Powell Valley and J.I. Burton with running back Boo Sensabaugh.
