Florida OL Grant Polk Commits To UVa

UVa has received a verbal commitment from Grant Polk, a 6’6”, 290-pound rising senior offensive lineman out of Charlotte High School in Punta Gorda, Florida. Polk, who becomes the sixth class of 2015 prospect to commit to the Hoos, has been contemplating the move for several weeks.

“I’ve been thinking about it ever since the day I got the offer,” said Polk, who received a scholarship offer from Virginia on May 13 (Click here for highlights of Polk). “It’s an Ivy League education and you get to play in the ACC. I talked about it with my family and my coach, and I just came up with the thought… Why not? It’s a great school.”

Polk had been in the state of Virginia before, but he had never toured UVa before today. He actually is still in Charlottesville with plans to return to Grounds tomorrow to meet with a Business professors.

“Definitely the tradition stood out,” Polk answered when asked for his initial impressions when he arrived at UVa. “They’ve kept a lot of really, really old buildings. They’ve still got people living in them, which I thought was cool. History. There is a lot of history here.”

On the athletic side, “I’ve always kind of been a fan of ACC schools,” Polk said. “I’ve always liked the conference. It’s really competitive. To get to play at one of the schools in the conference is awesome. I also liked all the coaches in the program. They all came up to me today and shook my hand. They told me how happy they were to have me there.”

Polk, who says he thought about committing “throughout the whole visit” before deciding to make the call this evening, plans to enroll at Virginia in January of 2015.

“I’m on track to be enrolled early,” Polk said. “[UVa Admissions is] 90-percent sure I won’t have to do anything special to get there early. I’m 100-percent sure I want to enroll early, but they need to look into it. They said they are 90-percent sure I don’t have to take any additional classes or anything.”

UVa offensive line coach Scott Wachenheim “sees me playing as a tackle, but I plan on getting in wherever I can. I’m even trying to learn how to snap now from our center at my high school.”

In Polk and Pennsylvania product Ryan Bischoff, Virginia now boasts two offensive line commitments in this class. Look for the Hoos to continue to address the position, as we project the staff to take five offensive line prospects in total in 2015.
