TheSabre.com Poll: Who Is Your Favorite Virginia Fan Of Recent Internet Fame?

Virginia and Notre Dame battled down to the wire Saturday before the Fighting Irish stole a 34-27 win with a touchdown in the final 12 seconds. The big story from the game this weekend other than the dramatic ending? Another UVa student winning the internet.

The camera caught student Mike Bunting slumped over the wall and within minutes “Sad Virginia Fan” was all over social media, message boards, and more. It spawned a fake Twitter account and even got picked up by big media outlets like CBS Sports that put out this meme in the moments following the game.

It isn’t the first time a Virginia student fan took over the web. Take a look.

“Wig Guy!” It was only in The Sabre’s neck of the woods really, but when Wig Guy was at the center of the site’s background during the 2014 basketball surge, it became a running theme on the hoops message board. Haider Arshad, then Hoo Crew President, even got Dick Vitale to wear the wig on his return to Charlottesville.

Last football season, “Goose Guy” stole the show – other than Canaan Severin’s one-handed catch of course – during Virginia’s home win against Miami. Brandon DeCoursey made it all over the major media outlets after his Journey serenade. Here’s his story with Streaking The Lawn.

Then, of course, there was February when an over-the-top dance-off caught the attention of fans at the John Paul Jones Arena first and then the internet soon after. “Dance-Off Girl” Cammy Leech actually lost the dance-off, but her fierce turn on HooVision spread to major media outlets from The Washington Post to Deadspin and more. Here’s a follow-up Washington Post article on the moment.

And now “Sad Virginia Fan” joins the Hall of Fame. The Cavaliers seemed to be on the brink of a huge upset against No. 9 Notre Dame, but the 39-yard touchdown silenced Scott Stadium and left Bunting in a heap. Here is a Cavalier Daily Q&A with him.
