Things I Learned 2013: Maryland

Another week … and the feeling is not much better than it was last week. Or the week before that. But the loss this week was a different kind of painful. After all, this week’s loss was to Maryland, and the loss this week played out in a new way. A very painful way.

That hurt. Bad.

Still, let me start the discussion with this: I absolutely, positively refuse to pin this loss on Alec Vozenilek. The starting punter, who has been forced into action as the placekicker, went 4 for 5 on kicks this Saturday. If you asked me before the game if I will take 80% from my back-up kicker, I will say yes. So painful as it was to see the ball miss just right, I cannot – I will not – pin this loss on Alec Vozenilek.

No, to me, the difference in this game was pretty simple: on several occasions, the UVa offense could not get a yard when it needed a yard … but 3rd-and-22 in the fourth quarter was not too much for the Maryland offense. And then, when the UVa offense finally was gaining yards, the coach told them to stop.
