Freshman Report: Hall & Perrantes

Knowing the 2012/2013 season would be Jontel Evans’ last with the Virginia men’s basketball program, point guard was an emphasis for head coach Tony Bennett and staff in class of 2013 recruiting. In July of 2012, Cape Henry Collegiate (Virginia Beach, VA) product Devon Hall committed to the Hoos and decided to reclassify from the class of 2014 to the class of 2013 — Hall began high school as a member of the class of 2013 but reclassified to 2014 early on in his high school career — was huge, but Bennett didn’t stop there, adding Crespi (Encino, CA) point guard London Perrantes as well to address the 1 spot.

Hall, a 6’5″, 210-pound left-handed point guard, is known for his feel for the game, passing ability, and leadership. He guided a Cape Henry squad led by his father, Mark, to a VISAA state championship in 2011/2012, earning VISAA Player of the Year honors in the process. Hall averaged 16 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists per game his junior year, and as a senior he averaged 13.7 points, eight assists and seven rebounds per contest. In postseason rankings, Hall earned 4-star status from 247Sports.com.

Perrantes, who is listed at 6’2″, 189 pounds on the Virginia official website, enjoyed a big-time senior season, averaging 19 points and 5.8 assists per contest as captain of the Crespi Celts. The ESPN 4-star recruit earned a number of accolades his senior year, including the John R. Wooden Award for California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section schools. Described by his Virginia classmate Hall as a “crafty” player, Perrantes has exhibited the ability to knock down the 3-point shot and also get to the basket. Like Hall, Perrantes played four years on the varsity level.

The point guard position looks strong with the return of a healthy Malcolm Brogdon and experienced player Teven Jones returning as well, but Hall and Perrantes are in the mix, competing for playing time as true freshmen. Responding to a question about Hall as well as his red-shirting policy, Coach Bennett commented on the two newcomers during media day on October 9.
