Wednesday Watch List: Duke

The Virginia football teams opens a three-game stretch at home this week when Duke visits Scott Stadium. The Cavaliers won the last meeting in Charlottesville 31-21, but the Blue Devils returned the favor in Durham last season. The Watch List looks at a few key items of the Wahoos this week.

Containing Crowder

The Virginia defense and special teams better be ready to deal with junior receiver Jamison Crowder this weekend. He’s a Jamison of all trades for the Blue Devils with 618 yards and 2 touchdowns receiving, 39 yards and 1 touchdown rushing, and 297 yards and 2 touchdowns on punt returns. Crowder is No. 3 in the ACC with 103.0 receiving yards per game and No. 1 in punt return average with 17.5 yards per return.

“He does everything. You look, he’s in the top three or four or five categories of everything he’s asked to do for Duke, and he’s an excellent player,” London said. “He’s got great ball skills. Talking about run after catch, make guys miss, he’s done really an excellent job for them, and he’s definitely a very good player for them.”

Crowder gave Pittsburgh fits earlier this season, for example, when he posted 7 catches for 141 yards and 1 touchdown (62 yards) as well as 109 punt return yards with 1 touchdown (82 yards). UVa has seen that big play act up close and personal. Crowder hauled in a 54-yard touchdown pass last season against the Hoos; he finished with 4 receptions for 84 yards.
