Game Nuggets

  • Virginia leads the all-time series with Duke 33-31. The teams have played since 1890.
  • UVa won eight straight games in the series, but Duke has won four of the last five meetings. Virginia has won 22 of the last 30 meetings since 1982.
  • The Cavaliers have scored at least 30 points in 17 of the last 30 meetings against the Blue Devils and topped 40 points six times.
  • UVa’s offensive line did not allow a sack at Maryland last week.
  • Duke receiver Jamison Crowder has caught 6+ passes in 8 straight games.

Match-ups To Watch

Virginia tight end Jake McGee vs. Duke linebackers and safeties. McGee is undoubtedly Virginia’s most reliable and most consistent pass-catcher. He has caught a pass in 9 straight games and leads the team with 27 catches, 233 yards, and 2 touchdowns. That comes on the heels of a 2012 season where McGee snagged 28 receptions for 374 yards and 5 touchdowns. Last week, the Cavaliers manufactured opportunities for McGee by creating mismatches against the linebackers and safeties of Maryland. McGee delivered with 8 catches for 114 yards and 1 TD. Duke’s defenders look vulnerable over the middle of the field or on crossing/drag routes so this could be another big week for McGee if UVa plans correctly.

Virginia running back Khalek Shepherd (and others) vs. Duke’s front seven. The injury report lists Shepherd as probable (trunk injury) so hopefully Shepherd is ready to go Saturday. I believe he needs more touches in general on offense, but I like him in this week’s contest in particular. Duke’s 4-2-5 defense (3 safeties) pursues quickly laterally at the snap, but if the offensive line can angle those defenders and wash them out with good blocks, the cut-back alleys are open for good yardage. Shepherd’s one-cut-and-go running style should match up well if the O-Line can get its job done.
