Game Nuggets

  • The all-time series is tied 17-17-1. The teams first met in 1965.
  • The home team has historically held the edge in the series. UVa is 10-3-1 all-time at Scott Stadium against Georgia Tech, while GT is 14-7 at Bobby Dodd Stadium against Virginia. The Yellow Jackets have just one win in their last 10 trips to Charlottesville (2009).
  • Not only is the series tied in wins, losses, and ties, the all-time score is basically even too. Georgia Tech holds just an 884-856 in points scored in the series.
  • This is the 89th Homecomings game at Virginia. UVa’s record is 45-41-2 all-time in Homecomings games.
  • Georgia Tech has turned the ball over at least once in every game in the series since 2001 with 19 total turnovers in that span. Since 1982, Virginia is 9-2 vs. GT when committing fewer turnovers.

Match-ups To Watch

Virginia tackle Morgan Moses vs. Georgia Tech defensive end Jeremiah Attaochu. The latest sack artist to take on the Hoos is Jeremiah Attaochu, who has 21 career sacks and 2.0 this season. Attaochu checks in at 6’3″ and 242 pounds with a nice burst of speed off the edge. He often stands up on obvious passing downs to give GT a 3-4 look. This will be a tough challenge for UVa’s Morgan Moses, who has struggled at times with speed-rushing ends throughout his career. Virginia’s offense does not do well when it plays behind the chains on the down-and-distance schedule so if Attaochu disrupts things by winning his battle with Moses, that could be a big problem for the Hoos.

Georgia Tech linebacker Quayshawn Nealy vs. Virginia’s underneath receivers. Linebacker Quayshawn Nealy is coming off a solid performance against Syracuse last week when he was named ACC co-LB of the Week. He had an interception, fumble recovery, pass break-up, and two tackles to push his season totals to 25 tackles and 2 INTs. The Yellow Jackets’ defensive scheme often does two things: drops its coverage to force underneath throws and sometimes leaves a linebacker in man-to-man defense in front of the deep safeties. In either case, that means Nealy will need to have his radar dialed in to the likes of Jake McGee, Zach Swanson, and Dominique Terrell. The Cavaliers will dump passes off to all of those players on horizontal routes and Nealy, along with his fellow LBs, will be in charge of stopping those catches for short yardage.
