Match-ups To Watch
Virginia’s offensive line vs. Virginia Tech’s James Gayle, Luther Maddy, and Derrick Hopkins. The Hokies’ defensive line is a handful for opponents as they get pressure in one-on-one match-ups or with twists and stunts up front. Gayle, a defensive end, has earned All-ACC honors in back-to-back seasons after posting 12.5 tackles for loss (7 sacks) in 2011 and 11 tackles for loss (5 sacks) in 2012. This season, he’s logged 9.5 tackles for loss (5 acks). Playing on the interior, Maddy and Hopkins create all kinds of problems with penetration into the backfield. Maddy has recorded 50 tackles with 11 tackles for loss (6.5 sacks), while Hopkins has tallied 45 tackles with 7 tackles for loss (4 sacks). UVa senior center Luke Bowanko and company will be tested all afternoon against the VT front.
Virginia running back Kevin Parks vs. Virginia Tech linebacker Jack Tyler. Parks enters this game on a quest for 1,000 rushing yards this season. He has carried the ball 210 times for 926 yards this season, an average of 4.4 yards per carry. Parks has scored 11 touchdowns to lead the Hoos in that category. He’s a tough runner between the tackles and will pick up something on almost every carry typically. Tyler, meanwhile, leads the Hokies with 89 tackles this season. A former recruited walk-on, Tyler picked up All-ACC honors after piling up 119 tackles in 2011.
