In some ways, the really hard thing about watching the Virginia Tech game was that it summed up the season so perfectly. After all, there were opportunities – plenty of opportunities – but in the end, a mix of mistakes at many levels cost the team the chance to win.

There it was. Time winding down in the second quarter. Tech has just put three points on the board on a field goal that had no business finding its way through the uprights, pulling ahead with a 9-6 lead. Moments after that, Frank Beamer called for the onsides kick, which Tech kicker Eric Kristensen executed perfectly, giving the ball back to a VT offense that clearly intended to go downfield and add to the lead.
