Offensive Changes
The week that bridged the 2013 and 2014 portions of the schedule started with a disastrous showing at Tennessee. The Volunteers smashed UVa to the tune of an 87-52 rout.
While that game was clearly a defensive debacle – UT shot 50% from the field and 61.1% from 3-point range – it also featured some of the ongoing issues with Virginia’s offense. The Hoos made just 32.7% of their shots and posted a negative assist-to-turnover ratio of 8 to 12, the eighth time that had happened this season and the 11th game with more than 10 turnovers.
Against the Seminoles, UVa made just 32.8% of its shots – a difference of just 0.1% – but the offense appeared to be much better. Why? First, the turnovers improved dramatically as the team committed just 6, the first single-digit outing since Liberty on Nov. 23. Second, the Cavaliers doubled their free throw attempts from 17 to 33.
