Perrantes’ Shooting

Of the seven Virginia players averaging at least 15 minutes per game, London Perrantes entered Wednesday night’s game as the only one yet to reach the 15-point scoring barrier in a game. A willing-to-pass point guard on a team full of offensive options, the freshman had been content to shoot only when necessary and to continually set up teammates for the majority of the season. In recent weeks, opponents shifted strategies and have tried to make Perrantes more of a scorer while possibly also disrupting the offense’s general rhythm as a result.

It hasn’t worked. Against the Hurricanes, Perrantes made 5 of 5 shots including 4 of 4 3-pointers. That gave him a career-high 15 points, which means all seven of the heavy rotation players now have gotten to that plateau for UVa. But that isn’t a one-game blip either. Over the last three games – at Virginia Tech plus Notre Dame and Miami at home – Perrantes is 11-of-15 shooting (73.3%) and 8-of-11 shooting from 3-point range (72.7%). Those numbers are far better than the previous 26 games where he made 31 of 103 shots (30.1%) and 14 of 48 triples (29.2%). Still, the shooting numbers had been steadily climbing in the right direction since the start of conference play where Perrantes had made 19 of 53 shots (35.8%) and 7 of 22 3-pointers (31.8%) in league games before the recent three-game stretch.

“I’ve been doing a lot of work outside of practice and in practice we’re doing a lot of shooting work,” Perrantes said. “I feel like I’m definitely getting a lot more comfortable. My teammates still have confidence in me and the coaches still have confidence in me and that’s helping a lot.”
