The Virginia (43-12) baseball team did not bid farewell to departing ACC member Maryland in the manner it had hoped. The Cavaliers fell to the Terrapins at the ACC Baseball Championship on Thursday, 7-6. The one-run affair in Greensboro was the sixth in UVa’s last 11 games and the Hoos third one-run loss in their last four outings.
Coach Brian O’Connor quickly identified what went wrong in his postgame comments.
“The reality of the game is if you give up seven runs, we’re usually not winning,” noted O’Connor. “We scored certainly enough runs to win this ballgame. We didn’t do the job on the mound in the middle innings and to Maryland’s credit they took advantage of it. They threw six left-handed hitters up there and if you don’t execute your pitches, they make you pay. “
Maryland starting pitcher Jake Stinnett (7-6) secured the win by scattering eight hits over eight innings. He fanned 10 Virginia hitters while tossing 88 strikes in 126 pitches.
