The Virginia baseball team draws a lot of monikers from its fans. The Cardiac Cavs. Omahoos. At Barry O’s Tavern in Omaha, it’s O’Connor’s Army. But this year’s College World Series edition may be earning a new nickname: the Walk-off Wahoos.
For the second straight game at the College World Series, after all, the Cavaliers won the contest in their final at-bat. On Tuesday night in Omaha, Daniel Pinero’s sacrifice fly in the 15th inning lifted Virginia past TCU, 3-2. UVa won its CWS opener Sunday against Mississippi on Sunday 2-1 when Mike Papi’s double ended the game in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Pinero attempted to bunt earlier in the final at-bat, but could not get the ball down. So with two strikes, he dropped the bat down to dig out a low pitch and the fly ball was deep enough to bring home pinch runner Thomas Woodruff. Nate Irving set up the dramatic conclusion with a full-count double to lead off the inning. After Woodruff checked in to run the bases, Branden Cogswell moved him to third with a sacrifice bunt and Pinero brought home the winning run.
“Coach Mac put the bunt sign down, and I missed twice, two curveballs,” Pinero said. “Then I just went into a two-strike approach kind of, and he threw me another curveball, and I just stayed back and put it in the air and got the job done.”
