Playing receiver isn’t all about scoring touchdowns, but when discussing the Virginia receiving corps it is an important place to start. Simply put, UVa receivers don’t get to the end zone enough.

Whether that scoring deficit is a result of quarterback play, blocking, scheme, route running, depth, or some combination of all of the above can be debated. What cannot be argued, however, is production. Over the last 10 years, Cavalier receivers have totaled 71 touchdowns. The highest team total for receivers in that decade was 14 in 2012, while the individual high-water mark belonged to Deyon Williams in 2005 when he had seven touchdown catches. Last season, Virginia receivers had just five touchdown catches, the fourth time in 10 years where the unit combined for five or fewer scores.

Here is the list:

  • 2013: 5 (Darius Jennings 3)
  • 2012: 14 (Darius Jennings 5)
  • 2011: 8 (Kris Burd 3, Tim Smith 3)
  • 2010: 9 (Kris Burd 5, Dontrelle Inman 3)
  • 2009: 5 (Tim Smith 2)
  • 2008: 7 (Kevin Ogletree 5)
  • 2007: 4 (Maurice Covington 2)
  • 2006: 7 (Kevin Ogletree 4)
  • 2005: 9 (Deyon Williams 7)
  • 2004: 3 (Michael McGrew 2)
  • 10-year total: 71

To put that in perspective, Florida State’s Kelvin Benjamin posted 15 touchdowns last season by himself to double the best individual effort UVa has had in the last 10 years as well as surpass the best receiving corps total in that time frame. Looking only at 2013, 13 different individual receivers in the ACC had more touchdown catches than the entire Cavalier receiving corps and two more matched the five.
