Hoo Preview 2014: Freshman Crystal Ball

The Virginia football roster lists 25 true freshmen, including both scholarship and walk-on players. With the season opener against UCLA coming up this Saturday, the Hoo Preview takes a look at who is likely to play from the freshman class this season.

There are four tags assigned to the players. Definitely – nearly guaranteed they play this season. Likely – strong to moderate chance they play this season. Unlikely – low chance they play this season. Redshirt – almost no chance they play this season. This breakdown is my opinion only and things always can change as the season progresses, of course. As fans know, Virginia didn’t play Keeon Johnson or Zach Bradshaw until later in the season last year. Johnson appeared for the first time in the fifth game, while Bradshaw’s debut came in the seventh game after he came back from an injury.

First, let’s look at the offense.

Quarterback

Corwin Cutler – Redshirt. Coming off a rough knee injury and a year at Fork Union Military Academy at a position where three players have seen the field already (Greyson Lambert and David Watford at quarterback; Matt Johns at holder), Cutler will get a year to get used to college football and college academics.
