Greg’s Grades & Trends: FSU, Miami

When a team loses there is always an attempt to assign accountability for the loss. In Virginia’s 34-20 defeat at the hands of Florida State, don’t look at the UVa defense for a target. In the loss, 21 of FSU’s 34 points came off drives that started at the Cavalier 23-, two-, and 22-yard lines, respectively. Even so, Jon Tenuta’s defense still held FSU to its third lowest scoring output of the year.

It’s this very fact that makes this team so frustrating. The Hoos were in the game. They were competitive with a top five team in their stadium and essentially gave the opportunity away. The defense did its job and UVa’s special teams were reasonably competent for the first time in weeks, but breakdowns from an offense that has been painfully inefficient the last two weeks continued. Again this time, the offense ultimately bears the heaviest load in a fourth consecutive defeat.
