Virginia opened the 2015 baseball campaign in the same fashion that has made the Hoos the winningest team on the collegiate diamond over the last five seasons. The Cavaliers swept a three-game set over the East Carolina Pirates on the road in Greenville, NC.
The history of Virginia’s meteoric rise to college baseball powerhouse contender is well-documented, old news. But sustained success, the kind of success that leads to being one of just six teams to make three College World Series appearances in the last six seasons and one of only eight clubs to reach the NCAA Regionals in each of the last 11 campaigns? Well, Virginia coach Brian O’Connor says there’s a formula for that.
Before departing for Omaha last June, O’Connor met with the media in Charlottesville and outlined his philosophy for sustained college baseball success:
“Pitching, pitching, pitching. Are we finished?”
